MGMT is the American band that's been shaking up the indie scene for the past five years. Their style is difficult to shove into one genre of music, but contains elements of indie, psychedelic rock, and pop. MGMT broke onto the scene in 2007 with their hit album, Oracular Spectacular, which featured the hit single, "Kids". MGMT's third, self-titled album is already in the works, but unfortunately doesn't have a set release date as of May 2011. While waiting for news on the new album, a handful of lucky fans will be able to catch them on their two 2011 tour dates this summer.
MGMT was formed by Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser while the pair attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Through mutual interests, VanWyngarden and Goldwasser developed a unique musical style that they recorded on their independently produced EP's, We Don't Care (2004) and Time to Pretend (2005). The EPs were released under the name The Management, but abbreviated it when they discovered another band with the same name. Time to Pretend was released on Cantora Records and the label sent the group on concert dates to promote the album. While playing tour dates, MGMT's demo, Climbing to New Lows, was leaked on the internet and unofficially became the group's first album.
MGMT gained the attention of Columbia Records in 2006, who signed the band and released their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, in 2007. Before embarking on tour dates in promotion of the album, VanWyngarden and Goldwasser were joined by three band members to make live concert dates possible. The musicians included Hank Sullivant on guitar, Matthew Asti on bass, and James Richardson on drums. When Sullivant left shortly after, Richardson moved to guitar and Will Berman became the new drummer. This is the line-up that would appear on MGMT's second album, Congratulations, in 2010. While the album has received mixed reviews, the criticism is mostly on the positive side with critics complimenting the more mature, flushed out sound. MGMT wanted to create an album where all the tracks speak to the audience, rather than creating a supremely catchy track that overshadows the rest of the album.
MGMT only has two scheduled festival tour dates in 2011: Good news for residents of San Francisco and Murcia, bad news for everyone else. MGMT will play the Estrella Levante SOS 4.8 festival in Murcia, Spain on May 6 and 7 and the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, CA from August 12-14. There are no more scheduled tour dates for 2011 as MGMT works diligently on their new album.
